In recent times, a dangerous trend has crept into the political space in Ondo State. Anyone who refuses to join the chorus of insults against Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, or who accepts an opportunity to serve the government, is immediately branded a “sycophant.” This label has become the weapon of those who mistake abuse for political activism.
Such thinking is neither democratic nor progressive. Democracy thrives on ideas, debate, accountability, and responsible criticism—not on insults, falsehoods, and personal attacks.
There is a world of difference between constructive criticism and reckless vilification. Constructive criticism identifies problems, offers practical solutions, and seeks better governance. Character assassination, on the other hand, is driven by bitterness, political ambition, and the desire to destroy reputations rather than improve governance.
Unfortunately, some individuals now believe that the only way to gain public attention is by constantly attacking the Governor, ridiculing every government policy, and portraying themselves as the sole defenders of the people. This is not opposition; it is political intolerance disguised as activism.
Those of us who have worked with government or maintain a respectful relationship with Governor Aiyedatiwa are not blind supporters. Respect does not amount to sycophancy. Loyalty does not prevent honesty. In reality, many of the most valuable advice given to leaders is offered privately, sincerely, and without the cameras or social media applause.
The irony is that many who are casually dismissed as “sycophants” have contributed far more to policy discussions, governance, and the development of Ondo State than those whose political contribution begins and ends with daily abuse on social media. Noise is not courage, and insults are not evidence of patriotism.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has repeatedly demonstrated that his focus is on governance rather than political distractions. While critics engage in endless attacks, his administration continues to deliver projects, improve public services, strengthen institutions, and pursue policies aimed at improving the lives of the people of Ondo State.
Leadership is not as simple as it appears from outside government. Every decision carries consequences, every policy affects lives, and every leader bears enormous responsibility. Those who aspire to leadership should understand this reality instead of reducing political engagement to abuse and hostility.
Let us disagree without becoming disagreeable. Let us criticize with facts instead of falsehoods, debate with respect instead of insults, and contribute ideas instead of hatred. That is the path to a stronger democracy and a more prosperous Ondo State.
History will ultimately celebrate those who built bridges of dialogue and development—not those who sought relevance through bitterness and personal attacks.
